Pentru a putea fi rulat codul JavaScript trebuie sa se bazeze pe un mediu de executie.Acest mediu de executie numit si mediu –gazda poate fi oferit de:
  • Navigatorul Web(e.g.Firefox)-programele JavaScript vor fi incluse via <script>;
  • O platforma de dezvoltare a aplicatiilor (e.g.Adobe Flex);
  • O aplicatie ;
  • Un procesor independent(Yahoo, Widget Engine);
  • Componente ale sistemului de operare;
